Collection of items from the Wallace Brothers, Manorcunningham, Co. Donegal
"My grandfather and great uncle owned the shop Wallace Brothers. It was located opposite the train station. My great grandfather was the station master and married a local woman, and they opened up the shop right opposite the train station. Like a typical local shop it sold everything. I have letters from people thanking my great great grandparents for the food parcels that they had given them when they were in need. The shop was then ran by my grandfather and my great uncle, and it passed to my uncle and father when my grandfather died. I was brought up in the house/shop, but the shop itself had to be closed in the early 1970s and the family sold the house last year. When we sold the house, we found boxes and boxes of documents and letters. Amongst the collection are insurance documents from Norwich Union Fire Insurance Ltd., a general rations book from 1951, an agreement as to customers’ bonus from the Imperial Tobacco Company, receipts from companies such as J. Ballintine, Ltd., and John Moffatt and Son general drapers, records of income for the shop, monthly sales records cash books, and Social Welfare Insurance card. The records are a great insight into the social history of the small, rural shop."
