1920s Dress

"This belonged to my grand aunt May, maiden name Hynes. She lived in Co. Offally and her family were very steeped in Republicanism – her brothers were in the IRA and herself in Cumann na mBan. My grandmother recalled an incident when the Black and Tans knocked down the door and they were confronted by my grand aunt with a hurley in her hand – they threatened to shoot her, they were looking for my grand uncle who wasn't there, so they smashed up the house. I don't know who made the dress. She married an accountant in the late 20's and they were quite well off. "
