Postcard from Mayo emigrant to parents at home
"This postcard was sent in January 1915 from his emigrant home in Bootle, Liverpool by my grandfather James Mangan to his parents at home in Doohoma, Co. Mayo. from where he had emigrated prior to the 1901 census. My father was born in Liverpool the previous year in May 1914. They were Irish speakers but could write only in English. My father was reared in Liverpool speaking Irish, something which stood to him years later when he was employed by Fuel Importers in the Phoenix Park and on the North Wall in Dublin during the Emergency. ( I attach an article titled 'Dublin Has A New Gaeltacht' from the front page of the Irish Press February, 27th 1946 ) The message in the postcard refers to a parcel received from home at Christmas time, presumably containing current cake, boxty cake and possibly a chicken.
