Cross-section of Tree
"This is the cross-section of a tree that was used for the pipes (before lead pipes) to bring water to the city of Belfast. My grandfather, Hugh McAlevey, was a Belfast City Councillor c. 1915-20. When the trees were replaced by lead pipes he was given this section as a present. While he was a councillor, he open the Falls Park. He was a bookmaker who made his money in America hoboing. He returned to Belfast and opened up pubs, especially on the Falls and Antrim roads with bookies in the back until they were legalised. He was also a monumental sculpture and built his own tomb before his death in Milltown Cemetery. "
