Travel Permit

"This is my father, Christy Duffy's travel permit. He left Ireland to work in Manchester after the emergency/WW2 and although he had a job to go to at Geigey's Engineering company, he was forced to work for 6 months at the New Town Colliery at the coal face. He told me that he was given a choice; building trade or mines so opted to work at the pit. Geigeys were very annoyed having given him a job etc so kept it open for him and he worked there for a few years, sending money home to my Mum each week until the economy had picked up in Ireland so he could return. He faked a Scottish accent to obtain a room in a boarding house which worked on the landlady who didn't accept 'Irish or Blacks' and his red hair added to the necessary lie! The restrictions listed under 'Permission to disembark' are very strict in deed. But he liked living in Manchester and made many friends. He also became an avid Manchester City fan till he died in 1993."
