Innti Magazine Cover

"Innti magazine revolutionised Irish language poetry when it launched in Cork in 1970. A new generation of poets mixed their traditional influences with a revolutionary outlook and experimental use of language. The first issue was printed as a broadsheet and is never seen nowadays, and the first five or six numbers are very very rare. I was in Blackrock Market, Co. Dublin a few years ago when I found a copy of issue 3. One interesting thing is how some major names featured are side by side with people who did not go on to establish themselves in the same way, or who just disappeared. I wanted to buy some other books as well but didn't have enough money so I asked the girl in the shop if she would put them aside for me for a week. I went back the following week wondering how much I would be charged as unlike the books, the journal was unpriced. It is also signed by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, who of course went on to become a major poet. When the girl had totted up the price, I think it came to about €30, she said 'and I'll throw that in for free.' I tried to be as nonchalant as I could. She may have been the daughter of the owner, I'm not sure if he would have been so generous!   "
