Silver Cigarette Case
"Family pieces often do not survive death. Clothes, papers, and mementos are discarded. This cigarette case recalls a time when smoking was chic and medicinal. Moreover, this family heirloom reminds descendants of their great grand uncle, Dr Thomas G. Dillon, whose crest it bears. He was a Roscommon man, who served as doctor in the dispensary district of Ahascragh and Fuerty from 1890’s to 1920’s. Perhaps he advised some of his patients to smoke to calm their nerves. Imagine he really used this gilded case. He rolled cigarettes to be smoked later. He may have shared them with his patients and friends. Today this case is an ornament to be admired, a family heirloom, with no family of the name Dillon, it is no longer useful, but a sentimental treasure beyond price. "
