Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union newspaper

"The revolting students. We seemed at that time to be in endless revolt. This is the cover of the Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union newspaper from the 8 November 1979. In the bottom right hand corner, Joe Duffy is haranguing the students who crowd around patiently in the top right hand corner. And patience is what we needed as the society slowly pulled itself up the steep slope of reform. For months on end as editor of the newspaper my nostrils were filled with the smell of cow gum as we pasted down the typewritten columns agitating for a better future. We marched out with our sentences hoping to escape the black and white certainties of the old moral order and the long, dark shadows of the Troubles. All those light-filled weekends in the top of building no. 6 on Front Square testing the limits of what could be thought and done. The fleeting world of today’s protest that eventually becomes tomorrow’s civic memory. "
