Mary Stanford 11 RNLI, Ballycotton, Daunt Lightship rescue of 1936.
"In February 1936, the Lifeboat, Mary Stanford 11 was launched from Ballycotton, County Cork, into a storm which was to span three days. The mission was to rescue eight crewmen of a lightship which was guarding the Daunt Rock of the coast of east Cork. Despite the lifeboat crew only getting three hours shore break in about 72 hours, all lightship personnel were saved. Some few years ago the hulk of the all-but-abandoned lifeboat was 'rescued' from Ringsend Dock in Dublin and was transported back to a cliff top setting in Ballycotton where it has undergone renovation as an historical attraction dedicated to that wonderful crew and all who serve the Lifeboat Service. Photo 1 is of the modern lifeboat at Ballycotton; Photo 2 is of the Mary Stanford 11 in restoration ; Photo3 is of my brother (with cap)John, Grandnephew of James of Ulysses notoriety, who penned a ballad about the rescue some years ago. (Standing between us is John's son,Gabriel)."
