"Those of us who started school in “the pounds, shillings and pence” era had much harder tables to learn off by heart. A half penny may have bought a few sweets in the 1930s if it was enough to post a letter within Ireland. How long are half pennies eliminated? We then got used to 100p in a pound, easier tables, didn’t even need to be learned, gone were the “ truppence, the tanner, the half crown (the coin to be gifted after one’s First Holy Communion, 1966) and the ten shilling note. In 2002 along came euros and cent. Soon 1c and 2c coins will be items of the past. "
