Wooden hinged box with wax medallion

"This small hinged wooden box contains what looks like a wax medallion of a figure (possibly of St Christopher) behind a brass mounted glass plate. It was found among my grandparents possessions although it may have been handed down to them. There is a history of seafaring in my family and I wonder if this was a relic to be taken to sea by way of keeping the owner safe?"
