Candlewick bedspread

"Recently, while staying in a friend's house and feeling rather cold, I went to the cupboard in search of an additional blanket! What I found was a pink candlewick bedspread! Not only was I nice and warm but I felt wrapped up in the past, as I reflected on childhood days. The candlewick bedspread evoked many personal memories as it brought me back to 1960's Dublin. I remember, as a child and later as a teenager, staying in my Grandmother's house. The 'big' bed was covered in a pink candlewick bedspread. In those days and in earlier times, it was considered a ideal wedding present for the bride and groom. The colours I remember are pink, yellow, pale orange and mint green. In my own childhood home, there was also a candlewick bedspread. It provided warmth, comfort and happiness as it wrapped me in its softness. Finding one was like finding a treasure! It inspired me to research its origins. Candlewicking, a style of embroidery with unique fringes, which became a sensation in the 1700's, is older than America, dating back to colonial days."
