"My father joined the Irish Army in 1940, aged 20, to defend his country. His eldest brother, a 1916, Cogadh na Saoirse, and Free State Army veteran, rejoined in 1940. My maternal grandfather, a 1916, Cogadh na Saoirse and Anti-Treaty veteran joined the 26th Reserve Battalion in 1940. Tales and legends of the Irish Army were very much part of our childhood. Other family members served in the British Army."
