An Irish coin of 2 shillings and 6d (pence)

"An Irish coin of 2 shillings and 6d (pence) equivalent to the English half-crown. At 'pitch and toss schools' this coin was often referred to as a 'horse'. A 'pitch and toss' school was where a group of men met to lay bets, pitched/tossed two ha'pennies in the air and bet on whether they would come down as 2 heads, 2 tails or 1 of each. A typical remark to be heard was I'll put a 'horse' on that. A game of 'pitch and toss' was held in many towns and villages throughout the country, typically where men gathered such as after Mass on a Sunday, outside the pub, on local village squares, before or after a football match etc. "
