2lb Weighing Scales

"In the 1950s, this 2lb Brecknell weighing scales was supplied to Kathleen Shanaghy, The Market Cafe, 6 Coalmarket, Carlow by P.J. Kenny & Son, Enniscorthy. It sat on the counter of the shop in front of shelves lined with large jars of Cadburys and Oatfields sweets along with large glass-lidded tins of Jacobs and Bolands biscuits. The pan was shaped at each end for easy dispensing of the item weighed into paper bags. Behind the pan was a small circular spirit level which was centred using the 4 adjustable legs to ensure accuracy of the readings. The triangular screen facing the customer was to show them that the correct amount was dispensed while the one facing the shopkeeper also had a ready-reckoner scale which showed the price of the sale based on the price per pound of the item sold. When Kathleen retired in 1966 she sold the contents of the business but kept this treasured item for use as a kitchen scales in her home at Lacken House, Clogrennane, Carlow."
