Spirit of Dublin Award - Teresa McCarthy

"1988 was the 1000th year of the founding of Dublin as a city. The Spirit of Dublin Trophy was created to be awarded to twelve citizens who portrayed the ‘essence’ of Dublin. The winners were nominated by the ‘ordinary’ people of Dublin. One of the recipients of this award was Teresa McCarthy, born and raised in the liberties in the heart of Dublin and known by many as ‘Mrs Mac’. This lovely, friendly lady sold newspapers in the Baggot St area of Dublin for over 60 years. There was always a kind word for everyone who bought their daily newspaper from her and her popularity was obvious when many people nominated her to receive the Spirit of Dublin Award in June 1988. This lady is one in a million and her spirit is forever in our hearts. The McCarthy News Delivery Service has a thriving family business today and continues on their Mam and Dads’ same wonderful ‘Spirit of Dublin’. "
