Iron

"The piece of iron was put in a turf fire to heat. When it was hot enough it was lifted out of the fire with a long handled tongs. The door on the iron was lifted up using the finger loop and the iron inserted, narrow side first, into the box. The door or hatch on the iron was then brought down vertically. Clothes were ironed on the kitchen table with a doubled over blanket which was kept for that purpose. I remember my mother using this iron . "
