Butter spades and bowl

"Following the churning the butter was placed in this wooden bowl which had been filled with water. Here the butter spades were used to knead and shape the butter, forcing out any residual buttermilk or impurities. The procedure was repeated until the water was clear at which time salt was added and the butter moulded into its final shape. Butter spades were grooved and normally made of maple."
