Forerunner to a Lambeg Drum

"The famous Lambeg drum dates from around the 1860s or 1870s, however this drum dates back to the 17th century. It is different to the Lambeg because it is built in sections. Word-of-mouth in my community says that this drum came to Ireland with the Williamite Army and was used in the Battle of the Boyne. I am fascinated by these objects as I am interested in the history of the Orange Order, largely because I am the owner of the historic Dan Winter’s cottage, the site of the Battle of the Diamond, which took place on the 21st of September, 1795. Dan was a local spirit grocers, and his house became a meeting place and a crossroads. At the time, there was a lot of tit-for-tat between Protestants and Catholics in Armagh and the battle was the culmination of much tension. That famous battle resulted in the creation of the Orange Order that would go on to be synonymous with drums like these. I am the seventh generation of Winters to own Dan’s cottage and I regard myself as the guardian of this history. This is why I collect objects like this."
