Irish War of Independence Black and Tan Medal Comrac Bar - Soloheadbeg Ambush
"This medal was given to my grandfather Pádraig Mac Cormaic, for his participation in the War of Independence. He was one of ten Volunteers from 3rd Tipperary Brigade who ambushed 2 RIC officers who were escorting a consignment of gelignite explosives at Soloheadbeg, County Tipperary on 21st January 1919. Soloheadbeg is regarded as as the first engagement of the Irish War of Independence. My cousin has the matching 1966 survivors medal. Pádraig Mac Cormaic died in Limerick in 1982. He was the last of the Soloheadbeg Volunteers to pass away."
