IT Carlow RAG Mag 98

"1998 saw my first RAG Week in IT Carlow (though to us of a certain generation it'll always be Carlow RTC; to those old enough to recall it, the Austin Waldron Regional Technical College). It's quaint, it's archaic (relatively speaking), it's most certainly of its time in terms of "graphics", content and layout (upside down, to the side blurbs were quite radical). With it's blue print on the front and back covers and with black print on the majority of the inside pages, budget & technical constraints were clearly a factor. Little details like "Your Union Needs You To Support Thursday Night Students Night" were indicative of a less is more attitude regarding nights out in the Foundry. Nowadays Student Nights're of a Monday and Wednesday with Scraggs and Tullys filling in the gaps nicely in between. Speaking of the latter pair, the prices back then, even allowing for RAG Week promotions were unreal. £1.60 for pints of Guinness, bottles of Heineken or Carslberg anyone? Or 3 pints for £5? Bargain central. Hangover Fridays in both establishments at the end of "Cheltenham for Students" involved chips & beans for £1 and free tea/coffee all day (Tullys) and a free bottle of Bull and a RAG Lunch for £1 in Scraggs. Also notable is the lack of advertisers; six in total including Tullys and Scraggs. Also featured were Supermacs, Bus Eireann, Rapid Express Coaches (now JJ Kavanaghs or simply "JJs") and a staple of Carlow town, Fast Eddies on Staplestown Rd. The content regarding jokes and illustrations is of its time for sure; think Roy Chubby Brown, Jim Davidson, Christmas cracker jokes and political correctness wasn't on the radar to be fair. "
