Irish red cross certificate

"It was most important in country Ireland to learn the rudiments of first aid especially when people lived a long distance from a hospital. Winter classes were common practice in rural Ireland. My mother Kitty Cummins/Meagher participated in frequent courses. I often attended one with her held in the disused Court House in our Village of Borris-in-Ossory. We felt we could handle a sudden emergency or a sick patient if required after the excellent training given by the Civil Defence. A certificate was given to all who completed the course. There was a selection of very useful books on First Aid that my mother kept in her library. It was good to be able to dip in to the books and learn what to do in an emergency. One book on home nursing published in 1932 covered everything from the sick room to ventilation and warming. Article on bandaging wound's and bed making for the sick. The British Red Cross Society first aid manual published 1940 was emblished with great drawings and useful hints for home nursing. "
