Book on Modern House Construction
"This is a book on Modern House Construction by G Lister Sutcliffe, first published in 1898, in six volumes. The book explains in detail construction methods, optimum house layouts and is a social commentary on the perils of poor housing. It was aimed at a lifestyle that became outmoded following the labour shortages after the First World War. The room titled HMC on the plans is an abbreviation of House Maid's Closet. The book contains stern warnings to the effect that the downstairs lavatory is only for use by male menbers of the family! "
