1918 Prison Uniform

"This is a prison uniform belonging to my grandfather (also Thomas Barrett) who was very active in the Galway area during the 1916 Rising. He spent time in a number of prisons in Ireland and the UK. For years, the story in my family was that he had escaped from prison with the uniform, but we have recently researched it and we now know that he smuggled it out upon his release. The uniform is a really important part of our family history but also tells a piece of Ireland’s story during those turbulent times."
