All-Ireland Cross-country Medal 1914
"Medal won by my grandfather James Hughes. It was won in England! The leading runner from England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland were awarded the medal and the National title. James finished fifth overall and was the first Irishman home. The Irish National Cross-country championship was also run in Dublin in 1914. James was born in Louth and emigrated to England in 1911. He also ran for Ireland while a member of Surrey AC. He joined the Royal Munster Fusiliers and lost his leg on the Somme in 1916 thus ending his career. He left this medal and his war medals to me. I also have photos of him running, in uniform, in hospital with a bandaged leg and lining up for a race in England for soldiers who lost a leg in the Great War. I can only seem to load up one photo on this site."
