26 County Casualties of the Great War - 15 Volumes
"This 15 volume collection (published in 2017) is the updated version of Ireland’s Memorial Records (published in 1923), but only for the 26 counties. I wrote and published it myself and it includes all the soldiers that are missing from Ireland’s Memorial Records, including every mention of a casualty in any newspaper for the 26 counties. I have been researching and collecting all of this information for over 15 years. Nobody else was doing it and I felt it had to be done so I did it myself without any support. The approach I took was to draw on numerous resources, not just one resource. The result was that I was able to reveal almost twice as many Irish that died in wars than any other volume previously. It is my personal passion. I originally began by uncovering the death of a couple of lads from Holycross, Tipperary. I started there, then I did Thurles, then I did Tipperary County, then the whole thing stretched out and I couldn’t stop until I did the 26 counties. I have been unemployed for over 10 years and it has been difficult to assemble this all by myself, but I did it, all 22kg of it, all 9,000 pages, every one of the eight million words in it. While creating this, I have had 30,000 soldiers looking over my shoulder, urging me on, and I’m very proud of it. In many ways, it’s an on-going project because new deaths from the Great War are still being uncovered."
