Frister & Rossmann Sewing Machine
"This is a Frister and Rossman sewing machine, it smells of oil because it's still in use. Serial no. 1676123, it was manufactured and purchased 1923. The story is it was bought by my grandfather, Peter Curtis, in 1923 from O. Quitmann in London. In 1924 they closed. He was bosun on a tea clipper doing the trade to India and as such he was responsible for the sails and maintenance of the boat. The machine was bought for the sails. It's a German machine. It was kept and passed onto my mother, Gladys Evelyn McCann. In the 1950's in Dublin everybody was very poor and had to make their own clothes, so it was used for making dresses, repairing clothes, etc. All her dresses she would make herself and the children's clothes and everything. Now it's used for turning up trousers and doing alterations for our daughters. "
