Primary School Certificate 1933
"Measuring 280 x 380 mm on heavy paper, with what appears to be a hand written template in Irish and English within a decorative frame of 'Celtic' type designs, initialled by JG. This item has survived since 1933 and shows the results of my father's first state exam which was taken in 6th class by primary school students. For many it would mark the end of formal education as there would be the expense of school fees to be met if one was to continue to secondary school. The 1930's was not an decade of prosperity in Ireland....Quite the opposite in fact as the so-called 'Economic War' with the UK had a negative economic outcome for Irish farmers and the economy as a whole.."
