Dorset Street Optician's shop chair.
"My father, the late Fred Joyce, took over an optician's shop - where he had been working since the middle '40s - and which was owned by his late boss, athletics enthusiast, Billy Morton. This was the receptionist's desk chair which I believe had been in the Dorset Street, Dublin premises since the 1940s. Dad was a nephew of writer, James Joyce, whom he met briefly in London in Dad's youth. Our paternal grandfather was Charles, youngest brother of James. The connection with Billy allowed us to be at the forefront -usually selling programmes- of many historic athletic meetings in the early days of Santry -Morton-Stadium on the northern outskirts of the city. These included the famous mile race won by Herb Elliot of the late '50s, bringing five runners in under 4 minutes, including our own Melbourne, 1956, Olympics 1,500 metres Gold Medallist, Ron Delaney.
