Celtic cross

"This cross was made by hand in Wormwood Scrubs jail in 1979 by an Irishman serving a long sentence there. He managed to smuggle the mahogany from the prison workshop and served four weeks in solitary confinement for his sins. The cross was a gift to me, in honour of my parents who were his close friends and continued to visit him throughout the 1970s, despite police threats and intimidation. It is a symbol of the resilience of the Irish community in Britain during times of widespread discrimination and anti-Irish prejudice, and the unshakable bonds of friendship between these Irish people which survive to this day, against all the odds.
