"As a child I was football mad. Ever since I was able to walk, I was always kicking a ball. I doubt I was the only child in Ireland with this obsession, but it must have been evident enough to encourage a colleague of my parents, Houssine Affelous, to think of me when he met Paul McGrath at a function in 1999. When my parents came home with the signed picture of McGrath, I could not believe it. At this point I had never been to a professional football match, and had only seen my heroes on the television. I could not imagine that an Irish international that had played for Manchester United had taken the time to write to me! I treasured the card for a very long time and even now it reminds of the days when football was all that mattered. "
