My grandfather's South Irish Horse enlistment certificate WW1 (1915)

"This enlistment certificate was awarded to my grandfather when he took the King's Shilling and joined the South Irish Horse regiment as a Trooper on the 18th November 1915. Thomas Henry Williams was one of the 206,000 men of the thirty-two counties of Ireland that served and fought with the British Armed Forces during World War 1 (1914-1918). At the time, my grandfather was a young man in his early 20's and like his father before him, was a qualified electrician working for Guinness's brewery at St. James' Gate in Dublin. He later transferred from the South Irish Horse in 1916 to join the Royal Flying Corps where he worked on aircraft in the field. By the time the war ended, he was a Corporeal in the Royal Air Force, his final rank being displayed on his war medals. I remember my grandfather well from my childhood years but he never ever talked about the War and sadly there were very few photographs either. But my grandmother would tell us something of it and also how she did her bit for the war effort as a munitions worker. This certificate and medals are treasured family heirlooms. It's hard to imagine how quick times goes by knowing it's nearly 102 years ago that my grandfather took John Redmond's call to arms as did so many other Irishmen. "
