Spike Island hand-made Celtic cross 1921
" During the War of Independence 1921, my grandfather Timothy Lehane, who was a member of the old IRA was detained on Spike Island (Spíc). The family story is that Timothy forged this medal from a George V half crown and a ‘thrupenny bit’ (three pence coin) while he was imprisoned on the island, in an attempt to make reasonable use of his time."
