A pike and poster from the War of Independence

"This photograph has two special Irish things that are related to my father, Martin O’Dwyer, who fought in the War of Independence East Limerick Brigade. He was captured by the Black and Tans in Cahirguillamore on St. Stephen’s Night in 1920, and five of his comrades were killed that night. He spent time in Portsmouth and Dartmoor Prisons, returning in 1922. Above is a pike that he buried beyond our farmhouse backyard, and was dug up in the early 1970s. And below is a poster of the launch of the Bruff IRA Memorial, unveiled by President Sean T O’Ceallaigh on October 12, 1952. It is dedicated to those who died in the War of Independence. Martin O’Dwyer is the second from the left in the front row. "
