Funeral of Most Reverent Michael Courtney
"Many Irish priests and religious sisters have headed to Africa to assist in the education and provision of medical services. Michael Courtney worked not only in one country, but in Rome, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Senegal, India,Yugoslavia, Cuba, Egypt and finally Burundi. Many of these places were experiencing political turmoil- and as a 'non political' Michael was able to work behind the scenes to bring peace. In Burundi, his work was, in the eyes of 'The Militant Hutu Forces for National Liberation' not in keeping with their aspirations - so they killed him. Another Saint for Ireland."
