The Ancient Mariner

"This radio Pilot "Mariner" was bought by parents, Elsie and Michael Greene, now sadly both deceased, when they moved into their newly-built home in 1952. We think it was bought in Clancy's of O'Connell Street, Likerick. The label on the back says the cost was £24.3.0 about €775 in today's money. Even in the 50s quality listening didn't come cheap. It is in perfect working order picking up many French and Spanish and other stations on the long wave. It also has an excellent short wave and medium wave. No wavelength numbers are needed to identify the station location as they are conveniently shown on the nine lines in front of the radio, from Milan to Vienna but which in most homes was always set to Athlone. Every home in Ireland had a similar radio In the 50s and 60s which woke us all up to 'proudly the note' around 8am and promised later that 'the magic of Mystic is yours for the asking ' to the beautiful melody of the Elizabethean serenade, and on Sundays had every family doing their own riverdance of jigs and reels around their kitchens to DInJoe with Jimmy Shand and His Band, before we graduated to the sophistication of transistors and radio Luxembourg for the top twenty.
