Under water communications cable

"This is a piece of the maritime Comms cable which ran between Valenta Island Co Kerry,to Hearts Content in Newfoundland. To the best of my knowledge it was the third one to be ran. The first on was technical failure, the second lost at sea during it’s installation. I came across this when I visited the boat building yard of a friend of mine who lives on the island. Not knowing what it was I suggested that it was a huge, very rigid, steel shipping rope,...only to be told what it really was. I couldn’t believe what a treasure I had come across. To think that I was holding the actual cable which announced to the “New World” The death of Presidents, overthrowing of monarchies, sinking of the Titanic, start of WW1, sinking of The Lousitania, and the announcement of the uprising in 1916 when the Ring brothers who worked in the telegraph station informed Clan Na Gael in America with the coded message “ Aunty’s opperation was a success” The cable is coaxial. The outer cover is a kind of hemp to protect the steel wormed banding. For an item which is 165 years old there is little or no rust on these mild steel cores which form the outer banding. Then there is a kind of jute insulative compound. The inner core is of copper made up of 6 outer flat bands, & 1 solid core approx 5 mm in diameter. "
