Old Style Farming

"This photo was taken in Co.Kerry where a farmer was spreading farmyard manure in the old, traditional style where it had to be piked a number of times, manually, from the byre to the manure heap, into the horse cart and once more spread by hand after being dumped in heaps in the field. More sophisticated horse carts had a tipping mechanism but this one did not so the shafts had to be raised to unload, or else the manure was spread from the cart. The tractor and mechanical manure spreader replaced this method which, in turn, were replaced by slurry tanks and slurry spreaders."
