Two Mugs from the 1994 World Cup
"One mug depicts Ireland’s mascot, a dog based on the Irish Wolf Hound who first appeared in 1988 for the Euros but is no longer used today. His name is Mac Cúl and he is dressed in the Irish footballer’s kit, kicking a ball and says “Boys in Green” Republic of Ireland. It also says USA World Cup ’94 with the FAI green white and orange logo including a ball. The other mug says “World Cup Ireland 1994" with an orange football on both sides. I've brought the mugs in on behalf of my father. The mugs are both still in use today and are in good condition. Shell petrol station in the 1990s ran a competition where if you bought a certain amount of petrol you got a scratch card where you could win a number of different football items; the mug with the logo on it was received in this way, the other mug’s origin are unknown. We're think these mugs show how Ireland’s soccer fans supported their national team in small ways, and to show how their support continued long after the event itself. "
