A piece of the old transatlantic telephone cable

"This was presented to me by colleagues from Cork when I retired from RTE after many years working on communications for Outside Broadcasts. It is a piece of the transatlantic cable. The first cable from Europe to America was laid from Foilhammerum Bay Valentia Island to Heart's Content Newfoundland. The first clear message from Newfoundland came through on the 13th August 1858 and the first from Ireland went through on the 16th August, it read: "Europe and America are united by telegraphy. Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, goodwill towards men." I couldn't print 1850s date in your box above."
