Postcard from Dad

"A couple of years ago, I found this in a box of stuff. I was amazed that my late Dad had sent me a card...I thought "what's this about?" as my Dad was not one to send cards. I could not ask him as he had a stroke in 2011 and lost his speech. I was intrigued as to why he would have sent the card. The stamp held the clue. I looked at the date stamp and it was 1984 so I google 1p stamp 1984 and found that on 1st January 1984, the Department of Posts and Telegraphs ceased to be. A state-owned company called An Post took on responsibility for postal services while Telecom became responsible for phone services. Before midnight, just before the chimes of New Year, An Post announced that to celebrate the new company and as a gesture of goodwill to customers, it would be possible to post a letter to anywhere in Ireland …for just one Penny …on the first day of business, so that's why Dad sent the Card. Dad passed away last year and this card is now one of my treasures."
